Taking Steps with Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, 50 years and counting
Last week marked the 50-year anniversary of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, and one of CI-Group’s very own was there as part of the celebration! Jenna Mehler Ovadia was selected to speak on a Facebook Live panel to celebrate the historic event.
At CI-Group, we take pride in the relationships and connections we share with our clients. We’re honored to be part of this special celebration not only because we procure, produce, and fulfill all of the Foundation’s marketing collateral, but also because of the personal connection we share.
Jenna Mehler Ovadia is one of the grandchildren of Suzanne and Irwin Rosenthal, co-founders of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. The grassroots efforts made by the Rosenthals, Shelby and Billy Modell and Dr. Janowitz have helped to evolve the organization into what it has become today – 50 years later.
For many years following the discovery of the two diseases, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was not well understood, and little research was conducted into the causes and treatments of Crohn’s and Colitis, much less a search for cures.
In 1956, Jenna’s grandmother, Suzanne Rosenthal began experiencing debilitating digestive symptoms. Doctors were unsure of her condition for years and even misdiagnosed her, consequently worsening her symptoms. Once she was finally diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, Jenna’s grandfather Irwin was overwhelmed with frustration that there were no efforts being made to find a cure. Using Suzanne’s experience as inspiration, Jenna’s grandparents began exploring ways to fund Crohn’s and Colitis research.
What started with a research grant of $32,000 has evolved over the past 50 years into a 38-chapter, 15,000-member organization that has funded more than $300 million in research of IBD.
Suzanne dedicated countless nights at her kitchen table in Queens, planning dinner dances and fundraisers. She even designed the Foundation’s first marketing materials – pamphlets that were hand drawn and typed out on her typewriter.
Fast forward almost a half-century to today’s marketing efforts, where CI-Group is proud to support the organization. Jenna is elated to continue the evolution that her grandmother started in the 1960’s. “It is so exciting to see the marketing efforts really come full circle from grandmother to grandchild. CI-Group has had the honor of supporting our client by procuring the branded merchandise and running the company store for the Take Steps Walk.”
